A large shipment of Prince Edward Island potatoes is feeding needy people in Montreal and the Quebec man who made it possible hopes other Canadians who hear about a US export ban on Island potatoes will do the same. Mac Watson, who has long supported Montreal's Welcome Hall Mission, said that when he heard about how the PEI potato inventory could be wasted because of a US export ban on Island potatoes, he decided to purchase potatoes directly from Island farmers and ship them to Montreal. He donated $15,000 worth of shares to the Mission to cover the cost of buying and hauling 27,000 kilograms of potatoes to Montreal. The potatoes will be used in the mission's hot meal program, which serves 1,200 meals a day, and its free grocery stores which are used by more than 2,500 people weekly. "It shows the government they don't have to do everything; we can do our share," Watson says.
