Studies on the benefits of immersing oneself in green spaces or natural environments has been shown to elicit four protections for well-being. For one, being with nature seems to cause improved heart rate and breathing, both of which are signs of reduced stress levels. Second, being with nature gives the mind a chance to rest, aiding "attention restoration" and thereby restoring mental acuity. It also seems to cause brain waves associated with calmness and daydreaming to synchronize. Third, being in natural settings seems to break cycles of thought "rumination," a behavior linked to depression and anxiety. And fourth, being in nature is known to induce happiness—naturally! During a time when many need to isolate and resort to electronic devices, setting aside time to be in natural spaces can give one's well-being the uplift it may need.
