At the beginning of 2020, The Center for Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio, was on a roll; the museum has sold its most tickets ever in 2019 and was receiving awards and recognition. Then the pandemic hit and the museum was forced to close. The museum had to find a way to replace the income it was losing and accomplish its mission, delivering hands-on learning to children. Enter the activity kit, a take-home kit that kids could use to replicate lessons typically learned inside the museum’s walls. COSI wasn’t alone in arriving at this innovative solution. Another Ohio museum called The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art, and Technology also used take-home kits to deliver on their mission in the midst of the pandemic. The kits were a hit and both museums are continuing to offer them, even after reopening. “These are products that aren’t stopping now that we’ve opened our doors. They have created new lines of revenue and community impact,” said COSI’s president.
