The Great Lakes in the United States hold major economic importance for more than 1.3 Americans and provide fresh drinking water to 40 million Americans. They are also a source of recreation and enjoyment. With years of pollution taking a toll on the lakes, there is now $1 billion in federal funding dedicated to cleaning up the polluted areas of the Great Lakes Basin, per the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The Environmental Protection Agency will clean up, strengthen nearby infrastructure, and improve nearby communities in 22 identified areas of concern. The Justice40 Initiative is a government initiative designed to ensure environmental and economic improvement guided along a structure of racial justice. At least 40 percent of the federal funds allocated to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative will go toward those designated “disadvantaged communities.”
