Polish volunteers are restoring old train tracks, first laid during the Austro Hungarian empire, that link Vienna with western Ukraine. The tracks will provide a new humanitarian corridor for Ukrainian refugees fleeing Russian bombing. For three days, volunteer teams worked along dozens of miles of track from sunup to sundown, repairing steel ties and shoveling dirt off tracks. At least six trains a day should be able to take Ukrainian refugees from the border to towns throughout Poland once the lines are ready. Across southeast Poland, locals have organized donations and offered their homes to the refugees. The ad hoc response has blurred the line between civilian and government, as there's a sense that now is time for mutual aid, funded by people instead of government. Poland cannot be indifferent to the tragedy of the Ukrainian people, said a top Polish infrastructure official. Railwaymen will help wherever possible.
