Two Ukrainian women who’ve fled their country amid the turmoil brought on by the Russian invasion have found refuge in Israel. Their grandmother -- Maria Blishchik -- hid a Jewish girl named Fanya Bass in Ukraine during World War II from Nazis, saving her life and ensuring that her family lineage would not end. And recently, Fanya’s granddaughter, Sharon Bass, welcomed Lasia Orshoko and Alona Chugai, Blishchik’s granddaughters to Israel. The families had kept in touch over the years and recently Chugai and Orshoko told Bass they were scared to live in Ukraine because of the Russian invasion; Bass vowed to do everything she could to help. She secured visas from the Israeli Interior Ministry for them to come to Israel and is now seeking permission for them to stay in the country. “We Jews say that if you do something good, like their grandparents did, it will come back to you. I feel like it is my obligation to be there for them and close the debt we owe them,” Bass said.
