A pioneering initiative called Wohnbrcke Hamburg is connecting volunteers with refugees like Ali Qorbani, helping them navigate the German housing system and find permanent homes. The nonprofit organization enlists volunteers to act as friends in a place that is largely alien to refugees. Volunteers help newcomers search for homes, fill out paperwork, and complete other tasks that may present a barrier to joining the community. Between November 2015 and October 2021, the project supported 3,012 refugees who often came from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iran. "We want refugees to not only find a house, but a home," says Alena Thiem, project coordinator at Wohnbrcke.
