Climate scientists say low-lying Bangladesh is extremely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The World Bank reported in 2021 that Bangladesh will have more than 19 million internal climate refugees by 2050. Many Bangladeshis have already lost their homes, land, and livelihood, but have found a new life in the riverside coastal town of Mongla. "When it comes to adaptation, Mongla is a success story," climate scientist Saleemul Huq told AP News. The climate-resilient town has an export-processing zone that offers jobs to refugees and new climate-resilient infrastructure such as an 11-kilometer embankment designed to stop flooding, two flood-control gates, a better drainage system, and a water treatment plant. Ten more factories will start production soon in Mongla, adding thousands of jobs. "We expect to replicate the Mongla model to at least two dozen other coastal towns across Bangladesh as safe home for climate refugees," said Huq.
