Drones darting through the forest canopy may help collect data needed to manage forest lands against fire and deforestation. Drones employing cameras, sensors, and advanced machine learning algorithms can cover more ground faster while collecting data that gives a detailed picture of fire risk and accurate measures of carbon capture. Treeswift, which says it is building a data ecosystem for the natural world, has raised $6.4 million from investors. Previous approaches used remote sensing methods such as satellites or planes but still needed humans to look at the forest floor.
