Patrap Singh Bora, a 56-year-old construction laborer in India, had never learned to sign his own name. Like many places across the world, his state went into a 3-week lockdown, and he was stuck with no work. To make the most of his time, he utilized literacy programs that were installed for illiterate migrant workers. Two hundred other workers were learning to read and write for the first time too. While he was first embarrassed, he eventually got much more comfortable and confident as he learned new skills, like writing his own name. "It's like the inner child in him is awake again," an official from the literacy program stated.
