Computer science professor Dmitry Korkin, who was born in Kazakhstan but is now a US resident, welcomed the family of Ukrainian economist, Vitaly Yurkiv. Other US academics that are ethnically Russian were also similarly engaged. The Scholars at Risk Network, created in 1999 to revive the rescue operations that existed during World War II, and the Institute of International Education, established in 1919 during the Russian Revolution, are organizing rescue operations. But there also are ad hoc ones. A medical researcher in the Netherlands created a crowd-sourced spreadsheet with hundreds of academics in many countries, pledging to welcome Ukrainian students and professors. In Eastern Europe, a scientist launched the Science for Ukraine website to help Ukrainian colleagues.
