Jan Gebert and his girlfriend repeatedly invite refugees FROM Ukraine to stay in their 400-square-foot Warsaw apartment until they have somewhere more permanent. Gebert is descended from Holocaust survivors, some of the few who lived through Hitler's obliteration of Warsaw's Jewish community. To not help others now is unthinkable to him. My entire family is involved in helping refugees, Gebert explained. His father has given up his apartment. His sisters have ferried Ukrainians from the Polish border into Warsaw. We are living because my ancestors were in hiding in Poland, said Gebert. Poland's Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich said the Ukrainian refugee crisis hit home differently to `member`s of the Jewish diaspora, including those of Polish origin, because of both their history and the Jewish tenet of helping those in need at any cost.
