Secluded Tsegi Canyon was once one of the few places on the Navajo reservation where water flowedyear-round and knee-high grass fed sheep and cattle. This was before erosion exhausted the canyon. Now, its restoration shows how the Navajo Nation Climate Change Program is healing land across its 27,673 square miles. The Navajo Nation released its first climate adaptation plan in 2018, but implementation was halted by the pandemic. Trust building is key, say wildlife technicians,because choices can be so personal and community buy-in is vital. Reintroducing songs, prayers, and rituals to reconnect with the Earth will be a part of addressing climate change because everything is interconnected, they say.
