The Canadian government is allowing those escaping the war in Ukraine to fly to Canada without passports or visas. Shortly after the war began, the government announced the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel (CUAET). Unique in Canadian history, the CUAET has no quotas, doesn't require documentation, offers a direct air route, and extends admission to non-Ukrainian family members. The permit lasts three years, and permit holders receive an open work visa. The CUAET, a true innovation in refugee protection, is a humanitarian route to safety without guaranteeing that displaced people give something back in return. This air bridge has the potential to be more promising than anything else in recent refugee history.
