Francine Lauzon, a retired real estate agent in Montreal, bought a hybrid car in 2003. She recycles diligently and keeps her showers short. Now she is part of a novel neighborhood geothermal project that provides heating and air conditioning for seven apartments, including her own. Their Celsius cooperative grew from discussions about how they could do more together with the 'ruelle verte,' or green alleyways, that parallel Montreal city streets. Their low temperature geoexchange system involved retrofitting existing homes within a densely populated area. For Lauzon, it is a model for how to change the energy use of homes by connecting residents who want a greener and healthier neighborhood.
