The Lisbon, Portugal city council recently approved free public transportation for young and elderly residents. The measure is set to begin in June or July for those over 65 years old and in September for students up to age 23. Carlos Moedas, mayor of Lisbon, said this is a “historic day”, stating that only two or three other European cities have approved such an initiative to fight climate change. It is also socially relevant, he said, due to the increase in prices, the war in Ukraine, and the last two years of crisis due to Covid-19. In the future, the city may extend free public transportation to other groups as well.
