When Gayle Steeves was handed $20 by a stranger in the grocery store for a small kindness she bestowed, she decided to use the cash to meet a need in her community. She knew that Moncton Hospital in her Canadian province of New Brunswick was experiencing a shortage of newborn knitted caps, so she bought some yarn and began knitting. As the story spread, so did the number of donors and knitters. Soon, she had hundreds of caps to bring to the hospital. She knew that these caps served a vital function: keeping a newborn's body heat stable, particularly crucial during its first 24 to 48 hours. "We were bombarded with hats, it was great," said Kelly Terris, who works in the maternal newborn unit. "Our supply is good now." For Terris, it was a heartwarming reminder about the power of community, and how good people will always come together for a good cause.
