When a friend posted a picture on social media of his sister's gravestone, Ryan van Emmenis noticed it had be come weathered. Running a cleaning company in Cheshire, England, he offered to go clean it. Then, while passing other decaying tombstones on daily walks, he realized, "I can do this more." Taking a few cleaning supplies along his exercise route, Ryan cleans off a little bit at a time. Even the 37-year-old's three kids have joined in. "Its good for the children to learn a little bit of history but also respect their environment," he describes. In one month, they have cleaned over 20 weathered and algae-ridden gravestones, some over 100 years-old. "Once you've cleaned up one of these graves, its really noticeable, which means people are stopping and taking a moment to read and remember these people."
