The hairdryer and hair clippers that Serhii Firsikov brought from Ukraine do not plug in to the sockets at Fogtown Barber Shop in St. John's. But, his scissors and combs fit right in. He spotted the barber pole as he and his wife made their first walk around downtown after arriving on May 9 aboard a flight that the Newfoundland and Labrador government chartered for Ukrainian refugees. Two days later, he was fully booked for his first day on the job. "He can only do so many haircuts a day. But people are finding other ways to support him. They're tipping him—they're paying for haircuts they're not getting," said Fogtown co-owner Chris Evans. Already in Poland before Russia invaded Ukraine, he and his wife helped refugees get from the border to safety and find apartments. He worries about his family back in Ukraine. "Every day, my mom and dad call me in the morning. Most of all, I'm afraid I will have no call from parents."
