On June 7, the Bois Forte Band of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe received 28,000 acres of land restored in its reservation, making it the largest land-back agreement in Minnesota. Under the Allotment Act, tens of thousands of acres of Native land were broken up and sold by the federal government to non-Native folks. But, with the help of the Indian Land Capital Companywhich paid for the purchasethe Bois Forte Band can manage this new land in an environmentally friendly and economically beneficial manner. Today we are acquiringnot through legislative actionover 28,000 acres of land that our tribe of 3,500 members does not have to pay a dime for," says the chairwoman of the band.
