One day, after making a wrong turn in Clarkson, Atlanta, Luma Mufleh ran into a group of refugee boys playing soccer. As a soccer coach, she asked to play with them, offering to replace their deflated soccer ball with a new one. Over time, the team grew and she quickly became the coach of a team of over 60 refugee boys. After hearing about their experiences, Mufleh realized that refugee children were severely mistreated in American school systems, giving her the idea of starting an all-refugee school. Thus, the first Fugees Academy school was founded in 2006, offering non-discriminatory and good-quality education to refugee children in the area.
