A new office building in Portland, Oregon, was built with special sturdiness meant to last for the next 5 centuries. And its rent is just 8% higher than a traditional office. The architecture of this building is comparable to that of fire stations and hospitals, along with environmentally sustainable features that maximize its reception of solar and water energy. All-in-all, not only does the building last long, but it saves water, generates more energy than it consumes, and uses more carbon dioxide than it creates. "It's ancient thinking from the perspective of really stepping back and thinking about climatic response, but it's also constantly looking forward and constantly using today's technology to figure out how to solve that," architect Kathy Berg says.
