Three major organizations in San Diego are joining forces to end homelessness. The Salvation Army, Feeding San Diego and the Lucky Duck Foundation are collaborating on a program that gives Salvation Army clients job opportunities as Food Rescue Drivers. They collect food that would otherwise go to the trash and instead distribute it to food banks that partner with Feeding San Diego. Lucky Duck Foundation funds the operation and pays the drivers’ wages. “It’s a chance for folks who are suffering from homelessness to get a real job that’s sort of a stepping-stone. It’s an opportunity to get practical skills and relevant work experience and go onwards and upwards from there,” said Drew Moser, Executive Director, Lucky Duck Foundation. The program started roughly two years ago; twelve drivers have completed it. Over 500,000 pounds of food have been rescued over that time.
