Using renewable energy sources as the lion’s share of an electric grid’s supply—coupled with the fact that renewables are becoming much more economical—is the basis for a decarbonization strategy aimed to stabilize the climate. At 50Hertz, a utility responsible for managing the flow of electricity to the 18 million people of Berlin, is channeling 28% of its power from wind farms and 24% of its power from solar farms. Years ago, skeptics would have thought that to be impossible. But this is now a reality. Still, 50Hertz does not plan on stopping here, with aims to make the grid 100% solar and wind by 2032. The utility wishes to electrify all processes wherever possible—powering cars, heating homes, and the like.
