The century-old Church of the Transfiguration in New York City found a solution after struggling with maintenance costs and declining membership. Venuely matches short-term renters with houses of faith in New York City with surplus space. Founded by two nonprofit organizations, Bricks and Mortals and Partners for Sacred Places, Venuely aims to develop capacity for faith communities. Vestry clerk Katherine Hutt -- inspired by the church's longtime relationship with the local theater community—co-founded Houghton Hall Arts Community, a rehearsal space located in a modern building attached to the church. The space will be available to rent to arts groups. Rev. Arden Strasser of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Hell’s Kitchen plans to use Venuely to rent its sanctuary and a multipurpose room to the arts community. "Artists, I think, have deep love for the world, and they want to give something to it and be received. If churches could help artists share from their heart with others, it would be a blessing to the city."
