When Albertans visit the new Domestic Abuse Resource Hub, simple questions help guide them to find the specific information they need, whether it be peer support, housing support or specific resources. Using artificial intelligence technology, the tool -- the first of its kind in Canada -- then provides credible, reliable, up to date information. The need became evident during the pandemic, when domestic violence calls surged by 57% and focus groups showed that much information on the internet may be outdated or incorrect. The questions and resources are guided by the best knowledge available on how people seek help, says Stephanie Montesanti of the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. “The site actually should become smarter the more that it’s used,” says Carrie McManus of Sagesse, which curates the information. More than four in 10 women and six in 10 Indigenous women in Alberta experience intimate partner violence in their lifetimes.
