The small strip of green in Imelda Castro's backyard, in an Northern Virginia trailer park, has been a classroom, office and community play space for a unique network of moms during the pandemic. Every Friday, the women empty a truck filled with fresh produce and other goods, making sure everyone who needs food gets it. They regularly check on one another, inform one another and push one another. “This is unique,” says Patricia Moreno, an outreach worker for Anthem HealthKeepers Plus for two decades. She first learned about them when Ana Delia Romero asked if she would speak to them about health care. Moreno said the mothers have worked hard to turn their trailer park into a village. They watch one another’s children, give one another rides, invite people to teach them about subjects that will benefit their families and neighbors, and communicate via a WhatsApp group. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and I’ve never seen a system like this,” Moreno said.
