In the City of Toronto, Canada, garbage trucks will be running on a biogas called 'renewable natural gas' derived from the anaerobic digestion of the very organic waste and food scraps they collect. The process is an environmentally-friendly, closed-loop system. Once scraps are collected at the facility, garbage trucks can fuel up on the biogas before heading out. Aside from this, the biogas can also be injected into the natural gas pipeline, thereby fueling vehicles and heating homes. As of July 2021, Toronto is blending the RNG with natural gas, reducing over 9,000 tons of carbon dioxide and process 55,000 tons of organic material per year.
