In short, yes, an alligator can be a man’s best friend. At least if you’re Joseph Henney of York, Pennsylvania, US, that is. Henny’s pet alligator, named WallyGator, is his certified Emotional Support Animal (ESA), a distinction that grants some legal privileges in the US. Henny and WallyGator live together, share the same bed, and curl up together on the couch to watch TV. Henney even takes WallyGator out in public and sometimes members of the public hug the alligator. “He’s a very special gator, but I wouldn’t recommend that anyone get one. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you will get bit,” said Henney. The proud owner plans to enter him in an annual contest called America’s Favorite Pet.
