Netty, a 15-year-old mixed pit bull with incontinence was sent by its owners to a shelter in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to be put down. After an evaluation, the shelter staff decided to give the senior dog some medication and her health improved. The Pennsylvania SPCA, a non-profit organization that protects animals, decided to try and find a home for her on social media. Soon after Netty’s heart-wrenching story was posted, it was shared by the thousands and found its way to Amy Kidd, a 48-year-old veterinarian who has been housing senior dogs with her husband for eight years. Having been accepted to adopt Netty but occupied with work, Kidd sent her 20- year-old daughter Emilia Suplick and other family members to retrieve Netty from the shelter. With one sniff, a seldom-seen tail wag, and some discussion about Netty’s health and future treatment with Kidd on Facetime, Suplick signed the contract and drove home with a well-behaved Netty in the car. Netty settled in quickly at Kidd’s home, always cuddling and carrying around the house a giant teddy bear Kidd bought. Her strength and overall health continued to improve with medication and hydrotherapy. Though filled with many monetary and emotional responsibilities, Kidd and her family believe the caretaking to be very fulfilling, rewarding and worthwhile. “She has so much to offer, and we are so lucky to have her,” Suplick said of Netty, who can walk up the stairs by herself daily. “I hope that other people are inspired by her story and give adult dogs a chance.”
