An art initiative is helping cities across Europe use art to improve road safety. A recent study from Bloomberg Philanthropies found that installation of art at busy intersections reduces traffic accidents, including those involving pedestrians and other vulnerable road users. Having funded a number of art intervention projects in the US, the Asphalt Art Initiative is now looking to support cities in Italy, Belgium, and other European countries use asphalt art along curbs, crosswalks, and intersections to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Aside from calming traffic, public art can also bring about positive transformation such as providing opportunities for people to connect and to create more inclusive communities.
