Morrison Creek Headwaters in Comox Valley, British Columbia, is home to the Morrison Creek lamprey, the only place on Earth where it is found. Conservation biologist Tim Ennis and a team have been putting forth a 20-year-long effort to protect the fish. "Seeing how it can evolve into a completely different kind of lamprey in this one place is really a testament to the stability of the hydrology in this ecosystem," says Ennis. "I think they’re quite beautiful." The region is also lush with biodiversity: four species of salmon, red alders, black bears, and beavers. Conservation biologists are hoping to raise funds to purchase a 289-hectare parcel this December, thereby saving the land from development.
