Between the summers of 2020 and 2021, philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated a median grant amount of $8 million to nonprofit organizations. The grants are unrestricted, meaning recipient organizations can freely choose how to use them, opening doors for project planning and staff investment. The grants not only impact organizations as a whole, but their leaders as well. Two-thirds of interviewed organization leaders gave a sigh of relief. "It’s an opportunity to be innovative and creative because we have more foundational support," said one person.
