Since 2013, South Korea implemented a mandatory composting scheme that requires residents to use "designated food waste bag" to discard uneaten food. The bags cost the equivalent of 20 cents apiece and curbside pickup is made available on the street. The bags are sent to a processing plant where the plastic is removed and the food waste is converted into biogas or fertilizer. Before, South Korea recycled 2.6% of its food waste annually, but nowadays that number is close to 100%.
