Globally, estimates suggest around 13 million tons of plastic enters the world's ocean each year. Since June 1, 2022, when Abu Dhabi introduced a ban on single-use plastic bags in retail stores, the emirate has prevented 87 million bags of plastic from going to waste -- which is about half a million bags a day, and 90% reduction in single-use plastic bags, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi states. Instead of plastic bags, many retail outlets are offering more eco-friendly bag options or charging a fee for reusable plastic shopping bags.
