For more than a decade, the Mother Earth Foundation in the Philippines has set up compost training programs in communities; it helped one neighborhood in Manila divert 92% of its solid waste from landfills. C40 Cities, a global network of cities that collaborate on climate solutions, connected it with Breathe Free Detroit, which is working to develop a community composting system as part of its efforts to address respiratory and health problems in their neighborhood caused by Detroit’s now-closed waste incinerator. Campaign organizer KT Andresky says many see a direct line between composting and recycling and improving their community health. The two groups have shared monthly calls since November 2020 and plan to visit each other next year.
