Nipissing First Nation will have a fresh, green source of food with their new venture, a modular hydroponic farm called Mnogin Greenhouse (Mnogin means ‘grow well’). It will grow about 225-thousand heads of lettuce per year, and business operations manager Geneviève Couchie calls the timing 'spot-on' with high lettuce prices from south of the border. Funding partners include Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), FedNor, and Waubetek Business Development Corporation, who are providing 60% of the $1.2 million cost. A test harvest sowing and harvest will take place in January 2023. Chief Scott McLeod looks forward to the branding as locally and First Nation grown, as COVID showed the importance of food sovereignty and promoting healthy eating.
