Chemical engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) Lausanne have invented a solar-powered artificial leaf that is capable of harvesting water from the air for conversion into hydrogen fuel. When the device is exposed to sunlight, it takes water from the air and produces hydrogen gas. More specifically, gas diffusion electrodes turn water – in its gas state from the air – into hydrogen fuel. Researchers were inspired by the way plants convert sunlight into chemical energy using carbon dioxide from the air.
