Bethany Johnson, one of the two 2023 Nevada Early Educators of Year, is the first in-home provider to receive the award. In 2016, she went through the Alternative Route to Licensure program to become an educator and got her first job teaching first and second grade. But she left the district in 2020 because she didn’t feel she could give the students all they needed and opened her own preschool, the Bold and Bright Academy, in the garage of her Las Vegas home. Her school, licensed as a daycare, offers half-day morning and afternoon classes, with 24 students divided between four classes. Last year, she launched an online learning platform for preschoolers and kindergarteners. Offerings include Spanish, yoga, science, and story time, and many homeschoolers use it. Along with the award, Johnson will receive $500 and a school supplies donation from Lakeshore Learning.
