Meet Iraqi refugee Maysoon Shaheen, who despite having a bachelor's degree in education, struggled to become a teacher in the U.S. due to regulatory and systemic barriers. However, adversity has given rise to innovation. Three U.S cities, Chicago, Lincoln, and Tulsa, are launching initiatives to bring immigrant and refugee educators into the classroom, addressing teacher shortages and unharnessed talent. These organizations "see this as a great opportunity to tackle multiple challenges at one time", providing mentoring for immigrants and refugees to complete their U.S teaching licenses.
