In my high school sophomore year, our Spanish teacher organized a trip to see an Andean band perform in Philadelphia and despite my initial skepticism, Inca traditions came alive for us that night and I rose out of my chair to dance with joy. As an educator, I ask my students: What stood out for them during their high school experience? Hundreds of former students, from schools in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Medellín, Colombia; and Buenos Aires, Argentina, say they remember a moment of wonder, maybe even of awe. We need to find ways to infuse such bursts of awe and moments of wonder into our education system. Connections and wonder are the positive stuff that students will carry with them from school decades after graduation. Rather than having them pop up unexpectedly, let’s build them into the curriculum. So when our former students approach us years later, they recall a myriad of magical moments from their days in our classes.
