In the protected waters around Pangatalan Island in the Philippines, the enigmatic tri-spine horseshoe crab has survived for more than 100m years but is now threatened by overfishing and habitat loss. French marine biologist Laurent Ballesta’s photograph of a crab in action has won Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023. It is his second win. This year’s competition explored humanity’s impact on the environment – positive and negative. Carmel Bechler, 17, from Israel won Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2023 for his dynamic shot of barn owls in an abandoned roadside building: “While inspiring absolute awe and wonder, this year’s winning images present compelling evidence of our impact on nature,” said Dr. Doug Gurr of London’s Natural History Museum. “Global promises must shift to action to turn the tide on nature’s decline.”
