The news of being infected by Covid comes as a shock for any individual, but for a young mother who has a breast-feeding infant dependent on her, it can be no less than traumatic. Praghati Badrinath of Bengaluru, India, tried her best to manage at home in the initial phases, but when she was hospitalized, her WhatsApp support group Snugbub, came to the rescue. They located lactating mothers who donated milk, packed safely in sealed storage bags, and delivered it to her home to feed her son. Now, as Covid spreads into the rural areas, upending thousands of lives and families, people and prominent NGOs are finding their own ways to cope with the crisis. When Asif Dada from Kashmir lost both his mother and wife within the space of two days, the problem of how to deal with his two-year-old daughter seemed almost insurmountable. While he could not bear to face his child, his maternal aunt solved the issue by breastfeeding the baby and integrating her into her own family. These stories of spontaneous human compassion can nourish and strengthen all of us in these troubling times.
