A crisis app for Afghans that uses crowdsourced data to deliver real-time information on dangerous activity has been helping people in Kabul stay safer since March 2020. Vetted Ehtesab users report activity through a private WhatsApp group, and a 20-person team all Afghans under the age of 25 fact-checks the tips. App users can opt to receive push notifications about activity near their location and submit their own tips. The Taliban takeover of Kabul in mid-August forced operational changes - it can no longer source information from police and government organizations, no longer uses "Taliban" in alerts, and the team now works remotely. At the end of August, Ehtasab was raising money through a GoFundMe campaign to hire full-time workers and expand the app's capabilities, and was hopeful that internet access won't be cut off in Kabul.
