Habitat for Humanity has broken ground on nearly 50 new affordable homes in the Portland area that will be ready next year, in response to the urgent demand for housing driven by the pandemic. Both projects are close to public transit stations, parks and recreation areas. More than 80% of those who live in Habitat homes are people of color, and many are frontline workers hit by the pandemic. The volunteer-driven nonprofit builds homes for people earning between 35% and 60% of area median income; they pay no more than 30% of their household monthly gross income on mortgage payments, insurance and taxes. Habitat recently completed 77 other homes in the area.
