The city of SeaTac, which makes up the 10 square miles halfway between the cities of Seattle and Tacoma, is home to a new mall catering to Somali residents and businesses. The area is one of two locations in the US that attracted significant numbers of Somali settlers since the early 1990's. The mall, which opened in May, is at full capacity and is full of Somali vendors. SeaTac is a story of community empowerment. It's important economically because it's giving an affordable place for people to run affordable businesses, said Dave Upthegrove, a councilman in King County. The founder wants to make the mall a one-stop shop for the Somali community; it has a barber shop, deli, community center, and a chiropractor's office.
