A stretch of 5 miles in the Lost Coast, California's wildest and most remote coastline in Mendocino County, will be bought by a San Francisco environmental group, The Save the Redwoods League, for $36.9 million. The aim is to save the stretch from logging and preserve it for public use. The rugged stretch of lush green forests of redwoods, firs and ferns is home to elk, deer, mountain lions and spotted owls. The 160-year-old logging company that owns this land is planning to exit the industry due to environmental restrictions and different interests among the younger generation of heirs. The league plans to eventually turn the Mendocino property over to a public or tribal agency to manage. With only 5% remaining of the old-growth coast redwoods, the move is long overdue.
