Archeologists working on a site in London have uncovered a mosaic floor thought to date from AD 175-225 - the largest area of Roman mosaic found in half a century. Everyone was excited when the first flashes of color started to emerge through the soil, says site supervisor Antonietta Lerz from Museum of London Archeology. The discovery was made last month on land used by London Underground in the 1990s for construction of the Jubilee line extension. The remains of a high-status Roman building were discovered on the eastern side of the site in 1981, and further digs were carried out during the Jubilee line works. After being recorded and assessed by an expert team of conservators, the mosaics will be lifted and transported off site for more detailed conservation work. The development – approved by councilors in 2020 – will include offices, shops and homes.
