Four years ago, the Chief of the Qualicum First Nation, Michael Recalma, experienced kidney failure. Ever since, Recalma has undergone kidney dialysis three times a week. His sense of humor and optimism kept him alive as waited for a donor all this time. And this year the time came indeed. After matching blood types and running a series of tests, hospitals found a match. Councillor Scott Harrison, a political colleague and now great friend, offered to donate his kidney to the First Nation Chief. The operation, which will take place in Vancouver, will enable Recalma to continue life working at the fish hatchery and spending time with his wife, Sharon. For Harrison, he said he simply felt called to do what was needed. One person doing something large changes the conversation, but large numbers of people doing something small creates a lasting change for the better.
