In East Portland, Oregon, the crown jewel for Nadine Salama's working-class neighborhoodis Mt. Scott Park. There, tall Douglas fir trees tower over a community center and tennis courts. But drive-by shootings, often by young men, took their park's peace. After a young drive-by shooter crashed into a fire hydrant in front of Salama's apartment, neighbors began asking how they could create peace. They worked with the city to install orange traffic barrels in a six-block radius around the park. Increased lighting and community events also reduced shootings in the neighborhood by more than 60%.
